Engraving depicts an exchange between Native Americans and colonial settlers of New Sweden on the Delaware River. The artist, Thomas Campanious Holm, had never been to America, but created the scene based on the manuscripts of his grandfather, Peter Lindstrom, an engineer and cartographer in the colony.
