Description
A fragment of a letter of unknown origin, found among the papers in the Garrett-Cremer collection. The letter, addressed to Confederate Secretary of War John C. Breckinridge, asks for "permission to raise a regiment of infantry inside of the lines of the enemy." This item's provenance, including whether a member of the Garrett family wrote it or whether it was ever sent, remains unknown. The letter has been torn off at the bottom, meaning that any signature from the sender has been lost.
